The SCUBAnauts love the ocean! In celebration of World Oceans Day (June 8th), the nauts are taking on Washington D.C. for Capitol Hill Ocean Week (CHOW) hosted by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. SCUBAnauts will discuss current ocean issues with Members of Congress and Congressional Staff, as well as experts from federal, state and local government agencies, industry, academia, and the nonprofit community. SCUBAnauts International is a Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) U.S. Partner focused on collecting data in the marine environment. During CHOW, SCUBAnauts will engage with students from around the world through virtual conferences to discuss ocean-related issues. The goal of this program is to provide a diverse group of young men and women with the opportunity, knowledge and tools to become the next generation of ocean explorers, stewards, and scientists.
Follow along as SCUBAnauts post their reflections throughout the week of June 7-10th.

I love the ocean because it is awe inspiring. It is beautiful, sustaining, fearsome and a we have much to learn from it. I will celebrate World Oceans day by contacting my representatives and reminding them the oceans deserve to be protected.
ReplyDeleteThe oceans are planet Earth's greatest mystery and uncharted wilderness...we must protect them and learn everything we can about their nature and their fabulous unknown inhabitants! Celebrate Earth's amazing diversity- celebrate World Oceans Day!! I'll celebrate by working on a song about the oceans.
ReplyDeleteI find nothing more relaxing than the sounds of ocean waves. I also love the oceans for their great diversity and beauty. I plan on celebrating World Oceans Day by sharing my love of the oceans with others in Washington, DC for Capitol Hill Ocean Week. I also pledge to continue making daily choices that will help conserve our ocean resources including reducing my carbon footprint (using public transportation or walking) and when eating seafood to use guides for choosing only sustainable species. ReplyDeleteOur oceans are one of the many things we take for granted and we assume others will take steps to ensure they remain healthy. We can all take a moment on World Oceans Day to find even a small way to make a difference. Our oceans will continue to sustain us if we take the time to understand & protect them.

I love the Ocean for so many reasons. It is the life giving force of our planet. Earth is the Blue Planet for this reason. Often taken for granted, the Ocean is the greatest resource we have. Its vast blue body is teeming with organisms, from microscopic zooplankton to the behemoth blue whale. Today, I will continue to make a conscious effort to make daily choices that will not negatively impact the Ocean--cutting down on water consumption, using "green" products, encouraging my friends and family to practice ecologically friendly seafood consumption, etc.
ReplyDeleteI love the Ocean because it is full of mystery. Everyday scientists are learning more and more about its vast and mysterious depths. For celebration of the Ocean, I will share my knowledge about the ocean with my peers.

The oceans are super sweet! They provide our oxygen, feed us, keep our poles warm and the equator cool. They contain billion of animals, including lots that we haven't discovered yet!
ReplyDeleteI'll be spending World Oceans Day in Washington DC, explaining to legislators why it's important to protect the ocean and spend money on research to learn more about it.

The Earth’s oceans are many things: beautiful, mysterious, dangerous, life-sustaining, and bio-diverse. As our knowledge base has grown over the years, we have learned how so very important the oceans are to life on land, and increasingly of the need to protect and conserve the oceans for future generations.

The ocean is is my "outer space". Where I can interact with an environment I could previously only experience though multimedia. Now I am immersed in it and wonder why I didn't take advantage of this sooner. My appreciation for it's strengths and frailties increase each time I dive.

There is nothing quite like the ocean! When experienced, it allows for the discovery of life, beauty, and mystery that is captivating. I feel privileged to be able to explore the oceans, and am showing my appreciation in celebrating World Oceans Day at Capital Hill Ocean's Week!

The ocean has been, and will always be, Earth's inner sanctum. In my growing time as a SCUBAnaut, and as fan of the maritime environment, I've come to appreciate the life that many people don't experience. It's incredible seeing the sights that are seen through the eyes of a scuba diver! I can't wait to attend the Capitol Hill Ocean's Week, it will be a fascinating event!

The Ocean has been a constant presence in my life - not only as a marine biologist but as a human being in awe of the incredible beauty, diversity, life giving and life affirming properties of our world's oceans!
ReplyDeleteAs a member of the IUCN Word Commission on Protected Areas and as Co-founder and director of Euakafa Island Research Centre but more importantly as a teacher of fantastic kids I'm humbled that I get the opportunity to be working with other like minded people to help everyone see the beauty and absolute preciousness of our majestic blue world!
Happy World Ocean Day/Week/Year/Lifetime.
